The Best Road Trip Tips
Rent a Minivan: Instead of taking your own personal vehicle, rent one - you’ll eliminate the risk of permanent damage and won't have to worry about racking up those miles. It is best to rent a minivan for short road trips (2-4 days) because they are more affordable than big SUV’s but still have plenty of space.
Save Time: Travel overnight to avoid peak traffic times. If you have kids, this is great because they will be asleep for most of the trip.
Take a Break: Make stops to stretch your legs, switch driver's, or stop for food and bathroom breaks. Plan food stops around rush hour traffic in bigger cities.
Snacks on Deck: Pack a cooler full of drinks (avoid sodas) and lunchboxes full of pre-made snacks. Some road trip snacks that are tasty and easy to travel with are mini muffins, trail mix, mini sandwiches, cold cut wraps, pre-sliced fruit, nuts, pita chips and hummus, granola bars, jerky, cherry tomatoes, snap peas, string cheese, crackers, baby carrots, pepperonis, pasta salads, and my personal favorite, Uncrustables!
Organize: Take time to organize the luggage and cooler(s) so you have plenty of space for passengers as well as easy access to everything behind you. Do not forget to utilize your roof racks. You can store at least three extra suitcases up there.
What Am I Wearing?: Wear comfortable shoes and clothing so you can lounge in the car. Most importantly, layer up. While driving from Florida to New Orleans last December, I went from wearing a single t shirt and jeans to wearing two sweaters, a trench coat, and leggings under my jeans!
