Foodie Friday: Orlando, Florida

Foodie Friday: Orlando, Florida

I have decided to start a new travel series featuring some of my favorite meals and snacks from all around the world. Some of my favorite and most memorable travel experiences involve eating and trying something new so I am starting Foodie Friday to share all of the delicious cuisines and beautiful eateries I encounter.

Today’s post features two local eateries in Orlando, Florida! What took me to Orlando? Well, in April, I met Tia. She is the owner and content creator for the Pennies In My Pocket blog and my favorite drool-inducing Instagram page, @EatLikeTia. After interacting with each other during a Twitter chat, we realized we lived in the same city! I was more than excited to meet a fellow foodie and a local blogger so we decided to meet up that weekend to attend the Black Bloggers United Power Hour in neighboring Orlando. Although the event was brief, we decided we would make a day of the road trip. We both researched local eateries and enjoyed breakfast, lunch, and dessert in Orlando and Winter Park!

Buttermilk Bakery

Tia had heard great things about this bakery so we stopped here before attending the Power Hour. I had the Tomato Avocado Tartine turns out to be a fancy avocado toast. Although the toast was a bit pricey at $10, it was quite filling and absolutely delicious! The crusty toast was topped with freshly mashed avocado, grilled corn, bittersweet tomatoes, and a tangy vinaigrette. I will try to recreate this at home this weekend because I’m drooling just thinking about it.

King Bao

After the BBU event, we were extremely hungry so we decided to find a nearby lunch spot. In my research, I found a very popular restaurant nearby that specializes in bao. Like I said, we were pretty hungry so we ordered three bao sandwiches each and I even scooped up a side of truffle tater tots (overboard - I know. My eyes are bigger than my stomach).

My favorite bao sandwich was the soft shell crab bao. The crab was perfectly crisped and paired with the spicy cream sauce. Tia and I both ordered the Glen Rhee bao which is stuffed with marinated Korean short rib, Asian pear salsa, and cilantro - it was delicious; the short rib was amazingly juicy! The Kickin Chicken was my least favorite bao. It lacked the memorable flavor that the other sandwiches had. I went with the truffle tots because I love truffle fries so I figured I might as well try them. They were tasty but a bit over seasoned to the point that they made my throat itch.

Overall, King Bao is my favorite restaurant that we visited that day. I will definitely pop in next time I am in Orlando.

 Kelly’s Homemade Ice Cream

Finally, we visited Kelly’s Homemade Ice Cream for dessert. This place is a personal favorite of Tia’s so I was excited to visit. I am not a big fan of ice cream but I love sorbet so I went straight for the sorbet menu. We both had the passion fruit sorbet which was absolutely delicious and completely refreshing after a full day of eating.

Have you been to Orlando before? What is your favorite place to eat in this sunny city?

xoxo,
